Non-Black Friday Rule

As I type this, I am listening to a song that helps me push through to the weekend, Black Friday Rule by Flogging Molly.

Yesterday’s outfit contained little black, which is abnormal for me. What made it feel normal was that it one of my regular uniforms: skinny jeans, t-shirt and cardigan with flats. And even though this outfit has always felt like a no-brainer for me, it was even easier this time. Having a pared-back closet has helped me realize how much of a brain workout getting dressed had become.

In other words, looking inside my closet was fantastic!

So let’s talk about the pieces from my list that I chose for this fabulous Friday:

Camel cardigan: When I picked up this cardigan at Old Navy this fall, I wanted to try out this color because I thought it would be a warm neutral that didn’t wash me out. I was right, and I have grabbed this fitted, lightweight warmer often since that day.

White t-shirt: This is actually a small man’s shirt from Polo Ralph Lauren. I bought it on a day when I had overdressed and felt hot. In other words, it had all the makings of a remorseful purchase. What (might) save it is that I had been in the market for a white man’s tshirt, it’s incredibly soft, and it has this nice horse and jockey detail at the bottom. I don’t know if I like the longer length, but it IS long enough to pair with leggings. Will that be enough for me to love it next month? The jury is out.

Skinny blue jeans: Ah, the Limited, how I loved you. These curvy, high-waisted skinny jeans are from my favorite (now defunct) store, the Limited. They are a beautiful, unfaded deep navy color and have a nice high waist that highlights my hourglass figure. Plus they have a LOT of stretch to them, so I can get down on the ground and play with E or run after Casper in the yard in them.

Black espadrilles: These were on sale for $10. I asked my sister what she thought, and when I did, an unknown lady shopper offered up her enthusiastic seal of approval. Needless to say, I bought them. Impulse buys are what I need to avoid, which is why I included them in this challenge. Unfortunately, they are a nice shoe, which might work against me if trying to avoid said impulse buys in the future.

All in all, I am pretty happy with this outfit and proud that I have included some impulse items in this capsule wardrobe because I think forcing myself to wear them will help me define my style. As in, do these actually work or did I just want to buy something and this [fill in the blank] item was there for the buying?

And back to music, which playlists help you power through to the weekend?
